Equipment & Setup

Indoor Grow Setup: Cannabis Grow Equipment Compared

Grow tent, lighting, pots, ventilation, nutrients and meters — the right gear determines how much work you put in and how much you harvest. Here you’ll find the basics and guides to the right equipment for every budget.

Overview

The right gear saves time, money and nerves

In cannabis growing, your equipment often makes or breaks the grow: a grow tent that’s too small, undersized ventilation or the wrong pots cause unnecessary stress — for the plant and the grower. At the same time, you don’t need to buy every gadget right away. This hub shows you which equipment really makes sense for which indoor grow setup, what to look for when buying and where you can save money at the start without sacrificing yield or plant health.

Basically, equipment falls into four categories: climate control (grow tent, ventilation, dehumidifier), lighting (LED or HPS), growing medium & pots, and measuring gear (pH/EC meters, thermo-hygrometer). For your first grow, solid basic gear in each category is enough — upgrades only pay off once you’ve mastered the basics.

The most common mistake is cutting corners on lighting first while spending money on extras like decor or unnecessary gadgets. Your light and your ventilation are the two factors with the biggest impact on yield and plant health — that’s where quality pays off most. For pots, soil and smaller tools, on the other hand, you can easily start with cheaper options.

If you’d rather get specific product recommendations instead of just the basics, our Recommended Gear page has a complete, carefully selected starter setup for beginners. For individual items, we compare several models based on manufacturer specs — for example grow tents (German), LED grow lights, exhaust kits and carbon filters, EC meters (German) and pH meters (German) or a combo pH/EC meter (German), which measures both values, plus fabric pots (German).

Pro tip

“Invest in ventilation and meters first — a grow tent with good lighting won’t do you any good if the climate and pH are off. These are the basics that will either amplify or cushion every mistake later on.”

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about cannabis grow equipment

What’s the most important equipment for getting started with growing cannabis?

Most important are a suitable light source, a working exhaust system with a carbon filter and a pH/EC meter. These three components have the biggest impact on success and plant health — you can save on everything else at first.

How big should my grow tent be for my first grow?

For 1–2 plants, a 24×24 in (60×60 cm) or 32×32 in (80×80 cm) tent is usually enough. Larger tents (39×39 in / 100×100 cm and up) offer more flexibility but also need correspondingly more light, ventilation and space. For beginners, a smaller, easy-to-manage setup is usually the better choice.

LED or HPS — which lighting is better for beginners?

LED is usually the better choice today: lower power consumption, less heat and easier handling. HPS has traditionally delivered a bit more light intensity, but it’s less efficient and produces much more heat that you also have to get rid of.

Do I really need a pH and EC meter?

Yes, absolutely. The wrong pH is the most common cause of nutrient problems, even when you feed enough. A simple digital pH meter doesn’t cost much and prevents most typical beginner mistakes right from the start. Often more practical are combo pH/EC meters (German), which measure both values with a single device.

How much should I budget for a basic setup?

Depending on size and quality, a solid beginner setup (tent, LED, exhaust, pots, growing medium, meters) realistically starts at a few hundred dollars. You’ll find a specific, curated product list on our Recommended Gear page.

Can I save on equipment without putting my harvest at risk?

Yes, as long as you don’t skimp on ventilation and lighting. On pots, decor or pricey add-ons that most growers never really need, you can easily save money without jeopardizing your grow.
